Department 56 Dickens Village "Williams Gas Works" - RS5165

Williams Gas Works handpainted porcelain. Introduced 2003, retired 2005. #56.58709. Measurements: 6.75" x 5.5" x 6.5". At the beginning of the 19th century, gas produced from coal was first used to light main thoroughfares and busy side streets in London. Smaller city streets and rural areas did not have gas lighting at all until the latter part of the century. Gas works like this were privately owned and located throughout London.
